About MediaScribe

MediaScribe is an independent project that turns any YouTube video into clean, readable text — right where you’re watching. No account, no tracking, no bait-and-switch.

Why we built it

Reading a video shouldn’t mean pausing every few seconds to copy a line by hand. And the tools that promised to help often pulled a switch — “free” to get you in, then a sign-in wall, a daily cap, or a paywall on the basics. We wanted the opposite: a transcript tool that is genuinely free on the essentials, honest about what it does, and respectful of your privacy.

What MediaScribe does

The Chrome extension shows the transcript right next to the player: read along while the video plays, search any word, jump to a timestamp, translate the captions, and export to TXT, Markdown, SRT or VTT. The website at mediascribe.app does the same from a clean reading page — paste a link and read.

It reads the captions YouTube already provides. In the extension that happens entirely in your browser; on the website the request passes through a stateless proxy that fetches the captions and returns the text. Either way, there’s no account, and nothing about you is stored or sold.

What we believe

An independent project

MediaScribe is built and maintained independently by a solo maker — not a company, not a venture. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by YouTube or Google LLC. “YouTube” is a trademark of Google LLC.
